Museum in a suitcase
"The Spirit of the Age"

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete, in its effort to be consistent with the needs of contemporary cultural politics, has taken under its care, with the intention of utilising it accordingly, an excellent collection of photographic material, donated by the couple Manos and Epi Pavlidis, creating an original museum in a suitcase of great educational interest.

More specifically, the photographic material in question traces the history of the most important movements of the first half of the twentieth century in painting, sculpture, music, dance, theatre, happenings and body art. The selection of the photographs and the writing of the texts was conducted under the supervision of well-known British art historian Charles Spencer and the material was first shown in the Athens gallery "Desmos" in 1978.

This material was digitised and then printed on banners, one for each movement, that can be easily set up for the purposes of an autonomous and self-contained exhibition.

The exhibition can take place in any kind of space, including schools, which is what we initially aimed for, without requiring any additional preparation.

We printed a special catalogue, a mini-version of the exhibition, in order to provide guidance to anyone interesting in borrowing the museum-in-a-suitcase and deploy it in their own space.

The museum-in-a-suitcase installation is accompanied by a projection of René Clair’s film “Entracte”, as well as a tape of Dada music, to give the viewer as complete a picture of the era as possible.

In addition to schools and cultural institutions in Crete, the museum-in-a-suitcase can be also exhibited in corresponding places throughout Greece.
