CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM OF CRETE

Since 2009 it is housed in a contemporary exhibition space of high standards, more than 1000 sq.m, that, after extension work took place, has recently incorporated the previous Municipal Art gallery “L. Kanakakis” (1992) and the Centre of Contemporary Art (1995).

Its permanent collection includes aproximately 700 works. The collection includes works of Lefteris Kanakakis (oil paintings, drawings and watercolours) mirroring all the stages of his artistic work, along with works of contemporary Greek and international artists,  covering a wide spectrum of contemporary Greek art from 1950 until today, from abstraction to digital art.

The works of the permanent collection are presented in the central space of the Contemporary Art Museum of Crete (st. Mesologgiou 32), while in other alternative exhibition spaces the Museum hosts temporary exhibitions of national and international content. At the same time, the Museum organizes lectures, training programs and has collaborations with other institutions  in Greece and abroad.

Since 1992 the Museum has presented 170 exhibitions, solo and group and has published 90 catalogues. Guided tours for adults and children are offered on all exhibitions.

Educational activities - Training programmes
Within the framework of Educational Sector of CCA, since 1996, have been operating Workroom of Fine Arts (st. Himaras 8) that are intended for children and adults.
The Educational Section and the Workroom of Fine Arts of CCA, implements for the citizens as also for the visitors in Rethymno art workshops, guided tours and educational programmes for children, families, as well as adult groups. The actions can be carried out also in English.
